Care, Handling, Maintenance & Finishing

Care

Lake Country Overhead Doors is proud to provide you with the best quality material and workmanship that we can provide you. Your door must be protected from the weather.

Prior to the installation, your garage door is most susceptible to absorbing moisture, warping and twisting. Doors in their unfinished state should be stored out of the weather, flat, and in a dry location. Avoid direct contact with concrete floors, storage in outside buildings or any other place that may have abnormal or varying temperatures or humidity levels.

If Painting we recommend before installation the door be lightly sanded and primed with at least one coat of exterior primer. The door must be finished on all surfaces uniformly. That includes both faces and all four edges. If one side is treated differently than the other side, it may absorb moisture at a different rate and may cause warping. It is also suggested to use a clear Dynaflex caulking to seal the fillet between the tung & groove and trim.

This will ensure a valid warranty and protect your door from warping caused by interior or exterior weather conditions. Many exterior finishes are designed to penetrate into the grain of the wood and protect the interior of the wood. These products are good but must be used in combination with other products that protect the surface of the wood, such as varnish and urethanes. Also note that most stains give no protection to wood, they only give wood color. Most quality exterior finishes will only last for two or three years before they loose some of their effective moisture protection characteristics. They must be refinished properly on a regular basis.

Proper protection and a quality product will protect your wood and your investment. See Finishing Instructions for products we recommend.

Handling

The preparation of your Lake Country Overhead door sections were built with care and packed to withstand the rigors of shipment. The door sections are a natural based, custom-built from fine woods, and are subject to environmental effects as are all wood products when placed outdoors. When the shipment arrives, the door sections MUST be kept clean and protected from any moisture. We highly recommend leaving the door sections in the original crating until ready for finishing as detailed below. Perform an initial inspection of the door sections for any minor touch-up required before finishing. See repair instructions below. DO NOT install the door sections before applying the recommended finish or the warranty will be voided.

If the door sections are to be finished at the job site, we recommend transferring the entire shipping crate to the site. If that is not possible, carefully prepare the door sections for transfer by wrapping them in layers of bubble-wrap and corrugated cardboard before re-stacking on a delivery vehicle. It is a good idea to place the protected door sections on a dunnage panel to add further support and protection from racking or the truck or trailer floor. Make sure the edges of the door sections are well protected before securing them with straps prior to travel. Do not over-tighten hold-down straps.

Take extreme care in removing the door sections from the crating. The door section can be very heavy and at least two strong persons should go about the removal and placement on appropriate surfaces to protect the doors from scratches, nicks or dents before finishing.

Maintenance

We recommend if the door is painted, it should be painted every 2-3 years. If stained, then re-stain per the manufacture's recommendation. Rollers and hinges should be checked periodically for looseness or wear. We highly recommend that you contact a professional garage door company to service and maintain your garage door at least once a year. If the door is overly heavy, it will not run as smoothly and may need more maintenance as the hardware bears much of the weight. We highly recommend extra support with struts on any door over 12' and the use of a 3" track with commercial hardware.

Finishing Instructions

Your LAKE COUNTRY OVERHEAD DOORS LTD. door sections must be finished, whether staining or painting and should be done by a qualified person just prior to the planned installation:

1) handled, stored and finished according to instructions in this document, which include, but are not limited to, the door being finished on all surfaces, including edges, with Sikkens CETOL 1 or primed with top quality primer prior to exposure to the weather and

2) within ten (10) days of receipt from the factory, the door sections must be painted with two (2) coats of Sikkens CETOL 23 or two (2) coats of top quality exterior paint, (NOTE: If the door is being painted a light color or white, the use of an oil based primer will be needed to prevent tannin bleed through); and

3) any exposed beaded or v-groove openings that could pocket water are sealed with a high-quality, polyurethane caulk or similar quality caulking material after the finish is applied. Silicone caulk is not recommended due to wood adhesion issues and poor paint retention quality. REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS FOR UNFINISHED DOORS

We take pride in our craftsmanship and manufacturing procedures in the building and handling of your new overhead door. However, due to shipping and handling some minor flaws or blemishes may be present at time of delivery. These minor flaws or blemishes are NOT considered factory defects. We recommend the following to correct the minor flaws or blemishes.

Scope:

Instructions for repair of a small scratch, dent, or crack on unfinished doors.

80, 100, and 120 grit sandpaper Household clothes iron Clean rag Pail of water

1) Remove any putty or foreign matter around the scratched areas.

2) Put a wet rag over the scratched areas and use an iron to heat up the rag. This will help to raise the grain on the scratched areas.

3) The iron process may not raise the grain enough. In which case, additional sanding may be required.
